Begin and Begin: Israel's election

Article Abstract:

The influence of the late former Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin is very strong in Israel's conservative Likud Party. The current prime minister and party leader Yitzhak Shamir relying on memories of Begin make up for his own lack of charisma. Begin's son Binyamin, a member of parliament, is gaining influence.

Israel's Likud party is torn by inner conflicts which threaten its chances in the upcoming elections. Moshe Arens and David Levy have both threatened to leave the party, putting prime minister Yitzhak Shamir in an awkward position.
