Beyond keiretsu

Article Abstract:

Keiretsu, or the system in which Japanese automobile manufacturers obtained parts from a certain Japanese parts-maker to the exclusion of foreign competitors, is breaking down both in Japan and the US. The activities of Toshio Kaji, a purchaser for Japanese car-parts makers who works in the US and Canada, demonstrate this trend. Showa of Japan, a Honda-associated keiretsu firm, owns Kaji's two US-based employers, Sunbury Component Industries and Blanchester Fresh Challenge Manufacturing. Kaji works to increase the local content of cars assembled in the US for Japanese firms.

Negative impact: Congressman Solarz' exit may hurt Asian interests

Article Abstract:

A possible inability by Rep Stephen J. Solarz to win another term would result in the loss of an Asian proponent in Congress. Solarz' plan for another term was derailed by results from the 1990 census report which showed the need to create a seat for Hispanic districts and remove three seats from New York. Solarz is an active campaigner for Asian issues in Congress. He was instrumental to the drafting of Congressional policies on the Philippines, India and Cambodia.

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission reversed an earlier decision to grant a $122 million rail-car supply contract to Sumitomo Corporation of America. The commission intends to generate employment in the area by buying or leasing its own factory site for future assembly of the rail cars. The Japanese firm won the contract for the 37-kilometer segment of the mass-transit line in Dec 1991.
