Some doubt forced holidays can help boost economy

Article Abstract:

China's required vacation policy forces all employees to take three weeklong holidays simultaneously in order to increase spending in the commercial sector, but economists say it has not helped consumption. Other problems include areas of the economy turning inactive while hotels, airports, and restaurants become congested with people, lack of sufficient notice when announcing the mandatory holidays, and anxiety from foreign-invested companies over the large amount of vacation time.

China brokers can borrow; move may spur cash flows into stock markets

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government has announced the end of the ban on bank loans for brokerage firms, a policy which is intended to boost fresh cash flows into the plummeting stock markets. The plan involves the brokers' use of stocks to back bank loans which could be utilized in buying additional stocks. The new policy is predicted to send mainland blue-chip stocks soaring and revive a rally which has been stalled since Jul 1999.
