Colony's new language requirement is talk of Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong government has included Chinese language proficiency in its revised civil service examinations. Many foreigners who apply for government positions in the colony have noted that the inclusion of the language proficiency criterion has made it more difficult to pass the examinations. Prior to the revisions, civil service applicants only had to know English in order to pass the examinations. The revisions were made in preparation of Hong Kong's reunification with China in 1997.

Hong Kong retailer Chaifa prospers as Playboy rabbits multiply in China

Article Abstract:

Chaifa Holdings Co. opened its first clothing store in China only in 1989, but since then, the number of its outlets has already grown to 318. The company's impressive growth can be attributed largely to the popularity among the Chinese of Playboy-branded garments and accessories, for which Chaifa holds an exclusive retailing license. Chaifa, which posted a 46% profit growth in FY 1994, is planning to open 50 more Playboy stores over the next 9-12 months.

China releases details of rules on property tax

Article Abstract:

The Chinese Ministry of Finance has finally released the implementing rules for a new property-gains tax introduced in 1994. The newly-issued implementing rules provide guidance on deductions and exemptions as well as the extent of local governments' authority. Moreover, the new rules serve to eliminate the ambiguities many foreign investors have complained of with regard to the tax.
