Critical mass

Article Abstract:

Banharn Silpa-archa, prime minister of Thailand, faces calls for his resignation. The Board of Trade has also called for parliament to be dissolved. Banharn's Chart Thai Party mainly represents rural areas of Thailand where political patronage is important. Coercion and patronage networks influence voting. Politicians make donations to temples and may help pay for funeral expenses. The Thai opposition alleges irregularities in how government contracts are awarded. Optimists are hoping that the system will change enough as a result of the crisis that patronage will lose its importance.

Town and country: new political party aims to bridge rural-urban gap

Article Abstract:

Amnuay Virawan of Thailand's Nam Thai party, who is attempting to bridge the gap between rural and urban areas, has modelled himself after former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun. He is seeking a base in both rural and urban districts but the differences and tensions between the two make that difficult. Urban voters want skilled managers to handle the national economy and further globalization. Rural voters seek solutions to their immediate local problems and want politicians willing to spend a lot of money.

Bye-bye Bodi

Article Abstract:

Bodi Chunnananda has recently resigned as Thailand's finance minister after only four months in office. It is believed that he clashed with prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa on a number of issues, including giving subsidized loans to a toll-way company and reducing the government budget. The resignation had a negative impact on the Thai stock exchange, with the SET index dipping below the 900 mark.
