For U.S. airlines, a shakeout runs into heavy turbulence

Article Abstract:

Major United States airlines are losing money after 27 years of deregulation, the industry lost $32.3 billion between 2001 and 2004. They are caught between cutting costs or raising fares to create profit and cannot reasonably do either. Airlines are subsidized by the government and there is not a natural course of the less successful competitors falling by the wayside.

GM's decision to cut pensions accelerates broad corporate shift

General Motors Corp. of the United States is planning to cap pensions for its salaried workers. After World War II, corporate America promised to look after longtime and loyal employees in their retirement. "Our employer-based social-welfare system is collapsing" says Alicia Munnell, Center for Retirement Research.

World airlines' loss is forecast to narrow to $3 billion this year

Article Abstract:

Airlines worldwide reported combined losses of $3 billion for this year, after losses of $3.2 billion in 2005. Revenues continue to be hurt by the high costs of fuel.
