GERMANY: SIEMENS GROWING IN SEMICONDUCTOR SECTOR

Article Abstract:

German Siemens believes the worldwide semiconductor market to grow by 20-30% per year in spite of the currently weak situation. According to Siemens, the world market for chips for security applications and smart cards to grow to US$ 610mn in 1998 and to US$ 1.9bn by 2003. The strongest growth of 60% per year is expected for chips with contactless interface. The market of controller ICs should grow annually by 30%. According to Frost & Sullivan, Siemens has a market share of 34% in the world market for smart card chips. After a turnover of DM 370mn in the fiscal year 1996/1997, Siemens' semiconductor division is aiming at a turnover of DM 3bn within the next five years. Ulrich Hamann, head of the division, sees further growth opportunities in the sectors of GSM phones, bank cards and multimedia cards and believes that identity cards and driving licences with electronic signatures are to be introduced within the next few years. Siemens is also counting on the fingerprint chip, for which it has already received the first orders. The chips can be used for theft prevention and access control in a variety of applications, ranging from laptop computers and GSM phones to cars and weapons.
