Goldman Sachs hampered by culture clash

Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s efforts to lead DBS Group Holdings Ltd. in a hostile takeover of Overseas Union Bank Ltd. resulted in severe criticism of its tactics and an apology from DBS to Overseas Union and rival bidder United Overseas Bank Ltd. The investment bank's attack on Overseas Union ran contrary to business values held in Singapore.

Focus on tech exports stifles city's economic growth

Singapore's continued reliance on technology exports to the United States following the Asian financial crisis is now backfiring, as the U.S. is decreasing its orders. The economy of Singapore contracted 0.8% in the second quarter compared to last year, and its 2001 GDP growth forecast has been lowered to 0.5%-1.5%.
