Hong Kong: acquisition fever

Article Abstract:

Merger and acquisition deals worth around $5 billion were completed in Hong Kong in 1996, according to BZW Asia. It is expected that there will also be a very high level of deals in 1997, with activity being dominated by Chinese companies. China Everbright Holdings, for example, purchased a 7.7% stake in Hong Kong Telecom for HK$11.4 billion. This deal was undertaken in order to allow China Everbright Holdings to acquire assets in Hong Kong and to raise capital in the Hong Kong stock market to invest in state-owned industries in China.

There has been particularly strong active in the airline sector, with Cathay Pacific, for example, selling a controlling interest in Dragonair to China National Aviation Corp in Jun 1996. Consideration is also being given to the possibility of organised bids for Hong Kong Telecom.
