'Joy Luck Club' plays in China: theatrical version to be staged in five cities

Article Abstract:

'The Joy Luck Club,' a novel by Chinese-American writer Amy Tan about the immigrant Chinese women and their US-born daughters, will be produced as a play in China. The Yale-China Assn, the Shanghai People's Art Theatre and the Long Wharf Theatre have joined forces to adapt and produce the novel. The resulting play opened in Shanghai on Aug 6, 1993 and will later travel to five other Chinese cities. Chinese audiences are expected to be keenly interested in how emigre Chinese have fared in the US.

Elec and Eltek International, a Hong Kong manufacturer of printed circuit boards with a $9.3 million annual income, is expanding into mainland China. The company has opened a joint venture with the Kaiping City Economic Committee in Guangdong province, a site chosen for its cheap costs, tax incentives and a personal friendship between a company executive and a city official. Elec and Eltek also plans a commercial real estate development project in Canton, a move that some analysts call risky.

China's nouveaux riches flock to Macau

Macau is drawing ever-growing numbers of wealthy Chinese tourists. Gambling and prostitution are the main draws, but many people pass through to see the sights on their way back from a trip overseas. Mainland visitors increased 650% in 1st qtr 1993 over 1st qtr 1992, and hotels and casinos reflect the boom. China will permit Macau's special attractions to continue after taking over the enclave in 1999; in 1992, gambling and betting taxes in Macau netted HK$3.6 billion.
