Economic forecasters continue to make inaccurate predictions, which in turn lead policymakers to adopt unsound policies. Contrary to popular opinion, the error rate in forecasting is not increasing, but has held steady. Many of the erroneous predictions are caused by errors and delays in economic statistics.

The future is not what it used to be

Article Abstract:

Economic forecasters are not, overall, any more inaccurate than they were in the past, but improvements could be made. New methods, such as the vector auto-regressive models, financial spread variables and business confidence surveys are drawing interest.

The UK's economy has shown improvement, but the recession in other European Community countries may hinder Britain's recovery. Several British economists discuss their forecasts for the gross domestic product, trade and currency issues and the recession.
