Quick approval of U.S. appointees seen as a plus for Asia; confirmations of Albright and Cohen raise prospects for a more bipartisan approach to policy

Article Abstract:

The quick US Senate confirmation of new secretary of state Madeleine Albright and new Pentagon chief William Cohen augurs well to a more bipartisan approach to Asian policy. Albright, the former ambassador to the United Nations, impressed most of the Republican senators with her promise to watch closely the delicate US-China relations. Cohen, the former Republican senator from Maine, promised to give extra attention to US' security relations with countries of the Asia-Pacific.

Information technology plan faces hurdles

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit has initiated a global agreement to phase out tariffs on information technology. However, several obstacles remain such as agreement on the list of products to be covered, tariff-elimination schedule and review mechanism to prevent cheating on tariff classification. Many are skeptical that an agreement will be reached before the WTO ministerial meeting on Dec. 9-13, 1996.

In contrast, Asian exports to the US and Western Europe during this period underwent a sharp decline.
