Rh ne Poulenc intends to build up strength in China. It is counting on setting up a total of 30 subsidiaries in China by the year 2000, compared with 18 at present. It plans to favour wholly-owned subsidiaries, but partnerships with local operators will be favoured, particularly for sectors where foreign companies are still banned from investing, such as biology, agrochemicals, and vaccines for humans and animals. The Chinese government intends to reform certain companies. It plans to consolidate the chemical sector in certain metropolitan areas such as Tianjin, Qingdao, and Shanghai, as part of this reform. Rh ne Poulenc put an industrial plant in Shanghai in 1996.
