SPAWAR'S destroyer upgrade

Article Abstract:

Government Communications Systems Div's (GCSD) AN/WSC-6(V)X multiband terminal systems have been installed in the US Navy's (USN) Arleigh Burke- class Aegis destroyers. The new terminals, which are shipboard SHF satellite communications antennas that operate both in the commercial C- bad and military X-band frequencies, are designed to improve the destroyers satellite communications capabilities. They were procured by the USN's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command through a $111.3-million contract signed with GCSD in Mar 1999.

Italian shipbuilders reap rewards of modernization program

Article Abstract:

Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA has completed most components for the pressure hull sections of the Type 212A submarine it is building for the Italian Navy. The Italian shipbuilder was able to achieve this due to a $20-million investment for new facilities and machinery at its shipyard in Muggiano, Italy. Part of the investment went to the construction of a special jig, called Spider, which is being used to hold the the frame of a pressure hull section.

Kaman repositions for re-opened Australian competition

Article Abstract:

Kaman Aerospace Corp of Bloomfield, CT, plans to submit a tactical variant of its SH-2G(A) naval helicopter for the Australian Defense Force Project Air 87 helicopter program. The plan was prompted by the re-opening of Australia's $770-million armed reconaissance/fire support helicopter acquisition program. Other companies that could vie for the Air 87 project include Bell Helicopter-Textron, Denel Aviation and Sikorsky.
