The making of a mining giant

Article Abstract:

South African mining group Gencor has undergone a dramatic transformation which mirrors the transformation of South Africa itself as it moved to democracy. Since 1993, Gencor has unbundled its non-mining assets and refocused on mining operations via several important acquisitions including the Billiton metals and mining interests of Royal Dutch Shell Group. Gencor's strategy was aimed at making the group 'world-class', and was a response to the realisation that South Africa was about to enter the world stage again, and to changes within the world marketplace.
