To have and have not: economic reform has pushed Bombay back into the spotlight as the Gateway to India. But the honour is also drawing attention to the city's many shortcomings

Article Abstract:

Bombay has both the potential and the ambition to be the gateway to India, but crippling legal, political, and infrastructure problems may bar the way to the city's global stature as a financial powerhouse. Rents in the city are higher than Tokyo's, often for office space with inadequate power and no water, but no new construction has begun thanks to the Urban Land Ceiling (and Regulations) Act, while the Rent Control Act leads landlords simply not to rent. The city's new leaders, right-wing Hindu nationalists, also raise concerns among businessmen.

Revving up in India

Article Abstract:

Daewoo leads South Korea's chaebol in expanding into India, boasting a booming auto plant, a stockbroking joint venture, and plans for other industries. DCM Daewoo Motors, with a $38 million Daewoo investment, planned to make 25,000 mid-size Cielo cars a year, but huge demand means another $1 billion expansion will follow. India offers a vast labor pool and potential market, and Japanese interest there has waned. South Koreans have moved in, capitalizing on their own price advantages and ability to make quick decisions.

Back on the road

Article Abstract:

Greater domestic demand has resulted in the increased profitability of China's automobile joint ventures. Automobile manufacturers are embarking on expansion programs to cope with the increased demand. However, the country's automobile industry is plagued by a lack of skilled labor, foreign currency and modern production methods. Automobile components are also in short supply despite government incentives intended to boost local spare parts production.
