Study: Costs hidden in mutuals

Article Abstract:

A study by shareholder advocate revealed that hidden costs of owing the 30 largest retail mutual funds would increase their published expenses by an average of 43 percent. A study conducted by University of Florida professors measured the impact of the fund's brokerage commissions and related costs in 2001 as they bought and sold securities on behalf of their investors.

Vanguard drops trading ban at core of scandals

Vanguard Group stated that it would drop an often-praised trading restriction meant to protect investors from market timing, a practice for ongoing mutual-fund scandal. Vanguard enjoys a reputation of protecting ordinary investors, which scraps its ban on exchanging shares of index mutual funds.
