School to work: preparing students for careers in healthcare

Article Abstract:

Students who participate in cooperative education programs are observed to make more informed choices concerning their academic majors and future careers and are considered as more marketable by employers. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Bay Pines, FL, has thus reestablished a cooperative education program with St Petersburg Junior College in 1996 to offer that opportunity to undergraduates. The new program has paired eight medical center staff with a number of students who have shown interest in healthcare careers.

Three trigger points for motivating job hunters

Article Abstract:

A cybernetic framework was presented by Don Griesinger of the Peter F. Drucker Graduate school of management to integrate the theories of motivation into a single system. This framework has three constructs that can be used to simplify the job hunting process for students. The three elements can be defined as changing the perceptions regarding the job-hunting process, establishing incremental goals, and expanding the set of skills that will motivate a person to achieve the desired goal.

The idea of the networking paradigm revisited

Article Abstract:

The philosophy of career centers has evolved to include career planning, placement orientation and career networking. A survey conducted by the National Assn. of Colleges and Employees indicates that 19% of career centers focus on career networking. Career centers not only serve students and employers, but also alumni, faculty and the staff. Career centers must educate their school campuses of their role and their philosophy.
