Orientation in stretched polymer-dispersed liquid crystals

Article Abstract:

Liquid crystal molecules in stretched films of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have been investigated relative to orientation behavior using infrared dichroism. The crystal was 4'-octyl-4-biphenyl-carbonitrile (8CN). Uniaxial stretching can bring on a macroscopic orientation of 8CN which can stay in the films at room temperature after the stretching force is removed, when 8CN is in the liquid crystal phase. Semicrystalline poly(eta-captolactone)(PCL) and an amorphous miscible blend of PCL with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were used for the polymer matrices. It seems that an elongated polymer cavity in stretched PDLCs brings liquid crystal director fields relative to the long axes of the droplets. The droplets are parallel to the strain direction.

Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of strained metallocenophanes: the discovery and development of a new route to high molecular weight poly(metallocenes)

Article Abstract:

Strained ring-tilted metallocenophanes can be polymerized by ring-opening thermal processes using ionic initiators or transition-metal catalysts to produce poly(metallocenes) of high molecular weight. Such materials may be useful precursors of ferromagnetic ceramics, presently difficult to form into all desired shapes. The novel polymers may also have nanotechnology applications.
