EU agrees to self-regulation principles, but doubts remain

Article Abstract:

European Union (EU) negotiators have agreed to let the concept of self- regulation act as a sufficient protection for private data sent from Europe to the US. While the agreement has raised the hopes of US negotiators that they can end a long-running privacy disagreement in the next US-EU summit scheduled for Dec 17, 1999, European Commission (EC) officials are reportedly less optimistic. Sources say EC officials want to see how self-regulation would be implemented.
