IL county sues Time over sweeps claim

Article Abstract:

The Cook County, IL, state attorney's office has filed a lawsuit against New York, NY-based Time Inc's subsidiary Time Consumer Marketing Inc (TCM). The suit accuses TCM, a major sweepstakes firm, of consumer fraud in its 'Guaranteed and Bonded Sweepstakes' direct mail promotion, which marketed Time Inc's magazines, books, videotapes, cassette tapes and compact discs to Illinois consumers in winter 1999. TCM allegedly used misleading and exaggerated claims about consumers' chances of winning a prize and falsely implied that consumers' chances of winning would improve if they bought the promoted products.

CA may withhold police data from marketers, Supreme Court rules

Article Abstract:

Direct marketers are concerned about a Supreme Court ruling to reinstate a California law that will allow certain police records to be released to the news media and other parties but not for commercial purposes. The ruling related to a case involving United Reports Publishing Corp. The Supreme Court held that the issue in this case was more about access to government records rather than one about restricting commercial speech.
