Is there an architect in the house?

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Architecture Week aims to encourage people to consider using the services of an architect by making available the services of more than 1,200 architects in return for a donation of 10 pounds sterling to charity Shelter. As part of this scheme, architect Robert Sakula visited the home of Alex and Charles McColl, who wish to reintegrate a basement which has been used as a separate flat into the main body of their home. Sakula took great care to understand the exact requirements of his clients before making a number of quite radical suggestions.

Digging for victory

Article Abstract:

UK underpinning contractor Abbey Underpinning and Foundations managed to survive the UK recession by restructuring, and now faces the challenge of improving the perception and image of underpinners. Abbey managing director Paul Kiss says that main contractors tend to look down on underpinners, believing that underpinning work is not a specialist job. Kiss has played a significant role in the development of the Assn of Specialist Underpinning Contractors, and hopes that one day underpinning will be regarded as a professional task.

Ready tech

Article Abstract:

Some British housebuilders are using techniques and materials, formerly used only for offices, in the construction of apartment buildings but have yet to use the innovative methods in house construction. Industry observers have criticised the industry for the lack of training given to workers. They suggest the introduction of prefabrication into the housebuilding industry will require better trained crafts people. Some housing developers have found skilled workers not willing to work with the new materials.
