Jury will decide franchise issue

Article Abstract:

A federal court jury in Connecticut will likely decide whether a dealer- manufacturer agreement constitutes a franchise in Niantic, CT-based dealer Boats Inc's lawsuit against boatbuilding and repair company Brunswick Corp. Boats Inc owner Brain Olson maintains that a sales agreement it forged with Boston Whaler Inc was wrongfully terminated under Connecticut franchise laws. Boston Whaler is owned by Brunswick Corp. A Hartford, CT, judge has rejected Brunswick's motion for a summary judgement on the case, which is expected to be heard sometime in 2000.

Its maritime heritage has been reinforced by the influx of a diverse group of marine companies beginning in the late 1990s. These enterprises range from a French sailboat manufacturer to a high-tech marine coatings producer. The public-private Charleston Regional Development Alliance, which was created to attract new industry to the three counties surrounding the city, is working to make the area a vital marine-related mecca.
