Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the problem of numerous redundancies resulting from company mergers in the housebuilding industry are discussed. Particular attention is given to employees in executive positions being made redundant and to the low morale amongst all employees.

A review of acquisitions in the UK construction industry during Summer 2000 is presented. Some of the firms have been purchased by companies outside the construction industry, such as Morrison being sold to Anglian Water.

The spate of deals involving construction firms Kvaerner, Morrison, Try and Galliford, is examined. The trend towards consolidation is analysed and the reaction of stock exchange analysts to the deals is discussed.
