Webstakes puts on new face with name change

Webstakes.com has changed its name to Promotions.com, in its bid to project itself as a business-to-business firm, and not as a business-to- consumer Web site. Promotions.com will continue Webstakes.com's services of helping online marketers build their databases and establish promotion on their Web sites. It would also assume the responsibility of operating Webstakes Web site, which has a database of three million consumers.

Start-up shoots for profits through CD swaps

SwapIt of Maynard, MA, is a compact disc exchange Web site that intends to make money by selling used CDs. The company, founded by Chmn/chief marketing officer Kevin Wells and Pres Howard Schneider, will sell the CDs to interested parties with no markup. SwapIt, which intends to make a profit from the $2 fee that it will charge for every CD purchase made through its site, will derive 40% of its revenue from banner advertising at its Web site.

Online auctions show no respect? Start-up says it has the site for you

Melville, NY-based online auction company BargainBid.com has launched a $14.5 million promotional campaign coinciding with its formal launch Nov 1999. The company has tapped the services of 'disrespected' comedian Rodney Dangerfield as spokesman. The promotion includes banner ads for 30 million online impressions, radio and network television advertising, billboards and a national outdoor campaign. The company auctions computers and related equipment at www.bargainbid.com.
