Unemployment rates reach 30-year low

Roofing contractors are only too cognizant of an extremely tight job market in 1st half 2000. Their difficulties in finding qualified, available personnel are reflected in the overall US unemployment rate, which, according to the latest government reports, declined to a record 30-year low of 3.9% in Apr 2000. Many worker-starved companies have reportedly increased wages to attempt to attract workers and retain existing personnel. Construction employment declined by 55,000 employees in Apr 2000 alone as other industries added jobs and workers.

Most residential roofing contractors expect 1999 to be a better year than 1998. In a survey conducted by Roofing Siding Insulation magazine, 57% of contractors think there will be growth in dollar volume, 37% believe it will stay the same, and 6% are predicting a downturn. In 1998, more than one-third saw an increase in their profit margins, down 4% from the previous year, indicating a slowdown in the steep roofing market.
