Why it pays to have an insurers' get together

Article Abstract:

Insurance conflicts make up a large proportion of building contractual disputes. Inter-party insurance company discussionss should become part of the pre-contract agenda. This would save duplication and unnecessary expense. The UK High Court decided that contractors Haden Young are liable for the repair of the National Trusts' Uppark House built in 1690. One of Hagen Young's workers accidently left a torch burning whilst working with oxy-acetylne on the roof. Hagen had not insured itself for such risk. The damage is estimated to cost 20 million pounds sterling.

Let's get together

Article Abstract:

Many Britons seem to have a negative attitude towards European monetary union. This is very misguided, as it means that the UK is ignoring the many business opportunities a united Europe offers. If the UK continues to hesitate about joining European monetary union, it will merely incur unnecessary foreign exchange costs while its business competitors in Europe benefit from extremely open trade. For the construction industry, joining European monetary union would bring the benefit of invoicing direct from one country to another without converting.

All systems go together

Article Abstract:

The construction industry could benefit from using the interoperable computer systems which are successfully employed by car manufacturers. The industry's heavy investment in AutoCAD systems means that effective information sharing between companies is almost impossible unless everyone uses the same software package or an alternative common language is invented for different systems.
