Price movements May 1998

Article Abstract:

Both consumer price indexes rose in May 1998, with a 0.2% increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) and a 0.3% increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. The CPI-U is at 162.8 before seasonal adjustment, representing a 1.7% increase over the previous 12 months. The CPI-W is at 159.5, a level that is 1.5% above that of 12 months earlier. Increases were 0.6% in food, 0.3% in energy, 0.3% in housing, 0.1% in transportation, 0.4% in apparel, 0.3% in medical care, 0.3% in education and communication, and 0.7% in other goods and services. Recreation was unchanged.

Article Abstract:

An increase of 0.2% occurred in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in January 1998, prior to seasonal adjustment. After seasonal adjustment, however, the CPI-U showed no change for the month. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) increased by 0.1% in January prior to seasonal adjustment, but was also unchanged after seasonal adjustment.

Article Abstract:

An increase of 0.2% occurred in March 1998 in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) prior to seasonal adjustment. After seasonal adjustment, however, the index did not show a change for the month. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) increased by 0.1% before seasonal adjustment, but showed a decrease of 0.1% after seasonal adjustment.
