Enterprise charts course for campus connection

Article Abstract:

A multimedia communication network that will be used to deliver an information service and computer-based courses is being established between the University of Wolverhampton, England, and small to medium-sized enterprises across the Black Country. The university's schools are working with the Interactive Communication Technologies Research Centre based at the university's science park to produce around 40 modules by mid-1997. The 8.3 million pound sterling Broadnet project has had to contend with the wide variation in university staff's experience with information technology.

The irresistible lure of life as a dilettante

Article Abstract:

Graduate school in the United States differs so greatly from the United Kingdom, that many students prefer to remain in their own country to complete their higher education. Class sizes often reach 100, and each professor has many students. Tuition rates are extremely high, with one year's tuition at Columbia University amounting to approximately 39,000 pounds sterling. Many students are in debt by the time the leave the course, and many drop out before completing their final examinations.

Enrol with Uncle Sam

Article Abstract:

Many British students who have considered applying to undertake postgraduate research at a university in the US have been discouraged by the high level of bureaucracy involved. All applicants must take the Graduate Record Exam, which can be difficult in the UK because little information is available. It is vital to obtain a record of undergraduate performance and letters of recommendation. The best recommendations are those from UK academics who are well known in the US.
