Eyeing up the future

Article Abstract:

An assessment of the positions taken by the various players in the field of higher education in relation to the question of whether or not they have the leadership vision to take the institution forward into the knowledge economy. It is argued that the time has come for institutions to grasp the nettle when it comes to Internet-based technologies and e-learning, but it is also pointed out that Internet-based technologies can be disruptive and need to be carefully and strategically managed if potentially serious side-effects are not to arise.

...believe dropout rates are too low

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the number of students dropping out of university are examined from the point of view that the number of dropouts should be higher. It is argued that higher education benefits everybody who takes part in it and therefore the selection criteria for students who want to enter higher education should be loosened or done away with entirely. This would increase the number of people benefiting from higher education but would also have as a side effect an increase in the number of dropouts.

Welcome from the shadows

Article Abstract:

The review of higher education, announced by the British government during Feb. 1996 and to be headed up by Sir Ron Dearing, is welcomed by the Labour party. The shadow further and higher education minister is pleased that an independent review is about to commence, and says that the party will submit their own proposals to the committee of inquiry. Labour see this as an opportunity to address the difficult questions surrounding higher education and want to move forward for a public debate.
