Article Abstract:

There are dangers involved in seeing videoconferencing as a teaching aid replacing lectures and tutorials. Videoconferencing appears to work well on TV, but more sophisticated equipment is used than academic institutions can pay for, and the participants do not always speak to images but to cameras. Lectures would be better recorded so students can listen in their own time. Tutorials involve interaction but this is of a type that cannot easily be reproduced using videoconferencing.

The orator's obituary

Article Abstract:

Lectures are a traditional way of teaching in United Kingdom universities yet their role has come to be questioned. Students are tending to miss lectures more frequently. They may have other commitments such as work, and have other ways of gaining access to the knowledge that the lecturer possesses. Lecturers may be untrained and have not enough time to prepare lectures. Students tend to prefer discussions and see lectures as outdated.
