One, two, three - Foresight

Article Abstract:

The government's Technology Foresight programme, started in 1993, seeks to develop a coherent policy for the future of science, technology and engineering in Britain. The emphasis will be on the technical application of research ideas so that Britain can become a centre for foreign industrial investment. Innovative research with no direct industrial application will also be supported, however. The government's Office of Science and Technology has given 30 million pounds sterling towards this venture and industry has given 62 million pounds.

Where there's a Will

Article Abstract:

The Thatcher government's response to the AIDS/HIV virus was related to past public health campaigns. Emphasis was placed on health education and avoidance rather than stigmatisation and quarantine. It became a major issue in 1987, with Cabinet meetings, increased public health spending and a TV AIDS week organised by the broadcasters and the government. After that date the initial fear died down as figures on infection were revised downward.
