'Please don't come around, we're having a bloody nightmare'

Article Abstract:

Two researchers discuss their work into the pressure felt by farming families in Devon, England, as a result of BSE, foot-and-mouth disease and the general recession. The research, conducted with funding from the Countryside Agency, revealed that while many farming families were experiencing levels of hardship, very few were suffering extreme poverty and none were prepared to give up their way of life. However, a report published in the British Medical Journal revealed that British farmers were more that twice as likely as members of the general population to think about committing suicide.
