Matsushita R&D targets mobilecom, multimedia

Article Abstract:

Matsushita Communication Industrial Company Ltd of Japan is focusing its research and development on four areas. These are wide-band code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems, Intelligent Transport Systems, household optical fiber cabling and core digital imaging technologies. Meanwhile, the company has completed the development of its mobile communications system for broadband CDMA and will be testing it Japan, and then in Singapore and Malaysia.

Amid consolidation, KEP reviews mobilecom plans

Article Abstract:

Kansai Electric Power (KEP) is reviewing its mobile communications business in a bid to streamline and consolidate its operations. Management also believes that developing these businesses individually would would impair KEP's ability to compete against NTT DoCoMo. Included in KEP's mobile communications group are pager operator Astel Kansai and Kansai Cellular Telephone. Both companies have suffered profit declines and have slow subscriber growth.
