State of the art in the analog CMOS circuit design

Article Abstract:

Current CMOS technology is becoming more important in analog circuit design as well as in digital design. Several advantages contribute to its increase in use: high noise immunity; low power consumption; high packing density; ease of design; and relative ease of scaling. Further reduction in the size of CMOS devices will enhance the importance of these factors. Analog building blocks are divided into two sub-groups: switched and non-switched capacitor building blocks. The combining of analog and digital functions on single chips is necessitated by the increasing complexity of systems. Developments in the use of CMOS in analog design are discussed, including CAD tools development.

Advances in bipolar VLSI

Article Abstract:

Integration levels of bipolar monolithic systems have recently exceeded 50,000 gates, giving rise to new applications as well as new design considerations. Since maximum gate count is usually limited by the allowable power dissipation, tradeoffs in minimizing power while maintaining speed in both circuit and device design are explored. Bipolar VLSI systems have demonstrated a 2.5 times speed advantage over the same system implemented in CMOS. The reasons for this advantage are discussed. A review of bipolar IC processes is presented and the impact of BICMOS technology on bipolar VLSI is discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Recent developments and trends in bipolar analog arrays

Article Abstract:

Four recent significant developments are increasing the use of analog arrays. First, analog designers have approved the use of tiles in analog arrays. The impact of these tiles and their characteristics are examined. Improved device models and circuit simulation tools give designers correct predictions of circuit performance. Automatic placement and routing, as well as greater cell libraries for analog functions, also contribute. New problems resulting from increased use of arrays and solutions to them are discussed, including future trends.
