Comply with ASME code during early design stages

Article Abstract:

Successful shell-and-tube heat exchanger design involves the analysis of many factors, such as thermal and mechanical design, external piping, seismic and wind loads, support design, cost estimation and drawing generation. The ASME Code and other contruction codes play a critical role in many of these analyses. Considerable advancements in compterized design tools are enabling engineers to do cost-saving, 'once-through' thermal/mechanical designs. Applying the ASME Code early on during the computer-aided thermal and mechanical design phase will make for accurate final designs as well as savings in time, effort and costs.

Easily optimize batch pressure filtration

Article Abstract:

The maximum production capability of batch pressure filtration systems can be calculated quickly and simply through a novel method that uses several dimensionless numbers and two graphs that correlate the two dimensionless numbers. Batch pressure filtration systems uses pressure to feed the slurry into the filter, with the solids deposited in the form of a cake, while the liquid-free filtrate is discharged. Its operating cycle is made up of four or five steps, starting with the feeding of the slurry, and ending with the precoating of the filter medium for the next cycle.

Optimize shell-and-tube heat exchanger design

Article Abstract:

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers for a specified duty should be designed using the best combination of parameters. Engineers should start by recognizing that the tube size, shell type, bundle layout and baffle type are the first considerations before the main design activity. They should also known how to introduce fouling considerations directly into shell- and-tube heat exchanger design.
