Passive strategies for commercial buildings: a treasure trove of design guidelines and actual performance data awaits architects and contractors as a result of a wide-ranging passive commercial building program

Article Abstract:

Commercial passive designers learned that residence-learned intuition cannot be trusted, that passive commercial buildings are dynamic structures adjusting to each variation in solar conditions, that the simpler the design the more effective, that building scale-models is the way to test daylighting solutions, that the most successful projects have the best-integrated design, and that the better defined the energy problem at the outset, the less expensive and more efficient the ensuing design process seems.

Choosing your system: passive principles

Article Abstract:

Sunspace, or greenhouse, costs more but provides more floor space. Direct gain suits small-aperture passive systems. Trombe wall is for additional-aperture system exceeding 6-8% of floor space. With night insulation, the 3 yield similar annual energy; otherwise, direct gain does less well; in warm climates, sunspaces are best for cooling since they can be thermally uncoupled from the house in summer.
