Safety first is the way to profits

Article Abstract:

New legislation is putting designers of hydraulic systems and components under increasing pressure to consider safety issues. Similarly, safety is becoming more important as designers become aware of the need to avoid negligence claims. The relevant standards of the European Union Safety of Machinery Directive are BS ISO 4413: 1998, 'Hydraulic fluid power - General rules relating to systems' and BS ISO 4414, for pneumatic systems. Designers of hydraulic systems for backhoe loaders and other construction equipment are under growing pressure to comply with ISO standard 8643:1997, 'Earth moving machinery - Hydraulic excavator and backhoe loader boom-lowering control devices - requirements and tests.'

Aluminium makes the future light

Article Abstract:

Aluminium is increasingly being used by materials engineers who appreciate its weight benefits. While aluminium alloys are weaker than steels, they have one-third the density of steel, the use of which is limited by its stiffness. The ease with which aluminium can be extruded and its resistance to rust mean that it is being used in applications such as rolling stock profile sections and automobile chassis.
