Preparing a substrate for growing mushrooms

Article Abstract:

Approximately four million pounds of button mushrooms are grown in the United States annually and the majority are grown in special mushroom compost. Compost preparation has two phases, the first of which is outdoors and the second is indoors. Real or synthetic straw-horse manure is an essential bulking agent and the production process takes between nine to 14 days. Nitrogen is produced during phase one and the mushrooms use this as food. The substrate is put into containers for phase two until it is pasteurized and fully decomposed. This takes between seven to 18 days.
