The Mekong Exploration Commission, 1866-68: Anglo-French rivalry in South East Asia

Article Abstract:

The tussle for South East Asia was triggered by a highly instructive expedition - the 1866-68 French naval initiative known as the Mekong Exploration Commission, which consisted of French principals that explored China by the river route. The Mekong would provide a rationale for the French presence in a region that Garnier and his colleagues invariably called Indo-Chine, a novel coinage that distinguished South East Asia from those other imperialist arenas of both India and China while endowing it with something of the prestige of both.

The ruling caste

An overview of the Victorian civil service in British India is presented. The decision made in 1947 by the leaders of the newly independent states of India and Pakistan, who proudly and openly used it as a model for their own civil services, gives ample evidence of the fruitfulness of the Victorian Civil Service.
