Enhanced backscattering: the universal wave phenomenon

Article Abstract:

Enhanced backscattering is found in electromagnetic, acoustic, spin and every other kind of waves. Constructive interference in coherent channels causes enhanced backscattering during the process of wave multiple scattering. Statistical averaging detects the phenomenon. Information derived from observing enhanced backscattering includes scattering multiplicity, scatterer structure and scattering medium characteristics, rendering it valuable in the optics, radar and acoustics fields. Rather than causing a degradation of radiation that results in coherence loss and average intensity decrease, propagation in random media actually produces an ordering of the radiation. This is called enhanced backscattering, two dozen instances of which have thus far been discovered. The most prominent displays are presented.
