Saw performance critical to lumber quality, yield

Article Abstract:

Saw performance has an effect on the cost of production, the rate of manufacturing and the amount of lumber produced. Saw performance depends upon the ruggedness of the lumber, the variation in sawing, the kerf and the feed speed. The feed speed should be maximized while the other factors should be decreased. Saw maintenance through frequent sharpening and accurate placement are important. The saw should not be utilized for long periods of time.

Softwood drying critical for value-added markets

Article Abstract:

Superheated steam-vacuum drying will dry lumber uniformly to ensure that products for the secondary market, such as doors, windows, window mouldings and furniture, are quality products. Equalizing and conditioning can produce lumber that has a uniform moisture content. Setting the pitch is also a concern of lumber manufacturers in the secondary market.
