Article Abstract:

Chinese American elders have a theory of health promotion and illness prevention grounded in a belief in conforming with nature. Interviews with 21 Chinese immigrants aged 60 or more revealed that lifestyle choices were based on three principles: attempting to live in harmony with nature, attempting to achieve personal happiness providing one's goal did not threaten anyone else's happiness, and believing and trusting in a divine being.

Article Abstract:

The most useful definitions of health protection and healthy behavior are the most flexible. Expert use of these terms varies by culture, and nursing researchers are attempting to develop a definition that can guide measurement of behavior that leads to healthier lives. Once clients can be clearly guided, they can accept greater responsibility for the health promotion decisions they make.
