Anesthesiology

Article Abstract:

Research in the field of anesthesiology is focusing on more efficient management of pain, better control of the side effects of anesthesia and methods to ensure a higher level of preparedness for anesthetic emergencies. Pre-operative analgesia seems promising as a method for controlling post-operative pain. New anesthetics such as desflurane require a shorter recovery time and may be safer for patients. Ondansetron, administered prophylactically, seems to reduce anesthetic-induced vomiting and nausea. Post-operative high blood pressure is another common complication of anesthesia. Toxicity has been associated with the use of sodium nitroprusside to control post-operative hypertension. Nicardipine controls high blood pressure equally well and may be easier to administer. Simulations of operative emergencies are being developed to ensure that anesthesiologists are fully prepared for emergency situations.

Modern compensation

Article Abstract:

The method of ranking government employees according to their skills used early in the 20th century was eventually adopted by the private sector. This method was the model for the modern system of job evaluation and performance appraisal. Salary planners, since then, have developed various methods of determining pay for different jobs. Some of these methods are discussed briefly.
