Evaluating liver fibrosis progression and the impact of antiretroviral therapy in HIV and hepatitis C coinfection using a noninvasive marker

Article Abstract:

The evolution of the APRI (alanine aspartyl transferase (AST)-to-platelet ratio index) and its predictive value for hepatic outcomes in a cohort of HIV and HIV-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients with more than 10 years of follow-up are evaluated and the effects of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on liver disease progression is assessed. The results have shown that APRI is a useful marker for longitudinal evaluation of the progression of liver disease in HIV-HCV coinfection.

Epidemiology and genetic characterization of HIV-1 isolates in the general population of Djibouti (Horn of Africa)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted for monitoring the general population of Djibouti in order to assess the HIV-1-infected population, the seroprevalence, and the genetic heterogeneity of circulating subtypes. Phylogenetic analysis of 34 isolates revealed a majority of subtype C (73%) as well as other subtypes, including CRF02_AG recombinants (18%), subtype D (6%), and subtype A (3%).

Prevalences, genotypes, and risk factors for HIV transmission in South America

Article Abstract:

The HIV risk factor information collected by cross-sectional studies and analyses provided a better view of the status of the HIV epidemic in South America. HIV prevalences were highest among men who have sex with men and were found to be associated with multiple partners, no injection drug use, and sexually transmitted infections.
