Article Abstract:

Coventry Healthcare NHS Trust has reached an out-of-court settlement totalling 35,000 pounds sterling with five black nurses who were among 10 who failed to keep their jobs after restructuring. The trust used psychometric tests to select nurses for nine new senior posts, with all the jobs going to white candidates. Using such tests in inappropriate contexts can discriminate against ethnic minorities and women, according to Unison.

Cross-country dash highlights ICU deficit

Article Abstract:

The recent case of Nicholas Geldard, a 10-year-old boy who died after being transported to four hospitals in search of a paediatric intensive care bed, highlights a serious shortage of these beds in the north west region. He was taken to three hospitals in Greater Manchester, then to Leeds General Infirmary, where he died. An inquiry into the case calls on trusts to improve arrangements for staffing intensive care beds.

Midwives settle for local pay deals

Article Abstract:

The decision by the RCM to accept local pay deals has attracted considerable criticism from the RCN, Unison and smaller unions. The RCM has now called off its protest, and in return NHS Executive will issue guidance to local managers about grading and pay levels for midwives. Other unions believe that midwives will now only receive a 1% pay offer and that the future of national bargaining has been endangered.
