Gathering momentum

Article Abstract:

The re-election of the Conservatives and the appointment of Virginia Bottomley as health secretary has given nurses in the community confidence that reforms planned under the 1990 Community Care Act will be implemented on April 1 1993. There were fears that the reforms would be delayed or that a there would be a change of government, but now health authorities can go ahead and attend fully to the reforms. It is feared that some health authorities have not yet done enough to prepare for the reforms, whilst others are already considering assessments, or that either social workers or community nurses are not prepared in some areas. Under the reforms, local authorities will take over the social security budgets for supporting those living in private residential homes.

Fans told to play the health card

Article Abstract:

District health authorities in the north west of England are issuing health cards to the anticipated 25,000 football fans due to arrive for the Euro 96 football competition. The health cards are written in the languages of the visiting nations and provide information on obtaining general medical advice as well as emergency care. The health authorities hope to prevent large numbers of fans with minor injuries from visiting the emergency departments of local hospitals.

Prejudiced treatment

Article Abstract:

Blacks can face racism in the National Health Service and have frequently been incorrectly diagnosed as being mentally ill. A code of practice introduced voluntarily on a nation-wide basis by health authorities could eliminate this situation. Nurses are in a position to influence how blacks are treated under the health service. Protasia Torkington, a retired nurse has written 'Black Health: A Political Issue', a book on the issue.
