Germ warfare

Article Abstract:

The UK Association of Medical Microbiologists suggests one way of reducing the amount of antibiotic resistant bacteria is for doctors to prescribe fewer antibiotics. They predict around 270 million doses are prescribed in the UK. Scientists are working on ways of stopping bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. Bacteria can become resistant by developing enzymes which make the drugs ineffective or by mutating so the drugs will not working the new bacteria. Hospitals often have strains of methicillin resistant staphycoccus aureus which is dangerous to staff and patients.

Lung diseases

Article Abstract:

The human respiratory system has a range of defence mechanisms to prevent lung damage, but the lungs are not protected against environmental and occupational exposure to some substances. Exposure to fibrogenic dusts, including silica dust, leads to a build up of fibrous tissue in the lungs causing them to become dysfunctional. Exposure to otherwise harmless substances can cause the body to react too defensively creating sensitization and asthma. Other exposure-related lung diseases include allergic alveolitis and lung cancer, which is due to smoking in 90% of cases.
