Information is power

Article Abstract:

Standardized nursing data sets are necessary because of the importance of information in achieving power for nursing in the health profession. A new book from the American Nurses Assn titled 'An Emerging Framework: Data Systems Advances for Clinical Nursing' assesses the progress made in developing minimum elements in a nursing data set. Adopting a unified set of data has accelerated the pace of mapping multiple terms to meanings. Establishing nursing data sets will increase the ability of nursing executives to support the profession and empower practicing nurses.

Are staffs prepared for the new information-based hospital enterprise?

Article Abstract:

Information technology can increase the quality and cost effectiveness of health care if medical personnel are properly trained in using advanced information technology in solving problems. The computer-based training that Ford Motor Co developed to train dealer personnel provides a good model for health care institutions in developing training for clinical and support staffs. Nurse executives and other administrative leaders must give adequate attention to information technology training.
