Inside story

Article Abstract:

Patients receiving enteral nutrition may have problems tolerating or absorbing drugs which are also given via a tube. Care must be taken to ensure the drugs are safe to be given this way and that they will not react with the feed. Problems include depletion of nutrients; changes in taste and reduced appetite or upset stomach. Adding drugs directly to feed is not recommended. They should be given separately, one at a time, and the tube cleaned afterwards. Most drugs are not designed to be given via enteral feeding and the drug companies would deny liability if problems occurred.

Inside story

Article Abstract:

Contributed articles progress through various stages before publication in nursing journals. The internal editor makes the initial assessment. An article may be passed to another editor, an external referee, be returned for amendment or rejected. The editor makes the final decision on inclusion according to considerations such as journal balance. Contributors may improve chances of acceptance by approaching the most suitable journal and by consulting contributors' guides.

Article Abstract:

Nurses may share experiences and benefit professionally from contributing to nursing journals. Nurses have the incentive, means and opportunity to write. Care studies or opinion on controversial subjects may be suitable for publication. Reports and information leaflets could develop into useful articles. Study tours provide an opportunity to write about practice in other countries. A list of published articles enhances a curriculum vitae.
